WHAT IS VEGAN?

Vegan is a type of vegetarianism. Living a vegan lifestyle means life is very colourful. You embrace the plant life and consume numerous delicious, bright fruit and vegetables. A vegan lifestyle excludes any animal products or by-products such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, honey, leather or wool.

WHY VEGAN?

People chose to be vegan for health, environmental and/or ethical reasons. Vegans try to do the best by the world and don’t want to harm animals in any way.

VEGAN NUTRITION

The key to a nutritional vegan diet is variety including fruits, vegetables, plenty of leafy greens, whole grain products, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Protein is essential part of this diet and the main source is from plant foods, however some plant foods are not a complete protein which means they are missing essential amino acids. Therefore it is important for vegans to consume a variety of grains, legumes, nuts and seeds and soy to ensure adequate protein intake. Other essential dietary requirements vegans may be missing are minerals (iron, calcium and zinc) and vitamin B12, however between conscious food choice and supplements, these gaps can be filled.

The health benefits of a vegan diet include possible weight loss due to less carbohydrates and reduced saturated fats, increased energy, healthy skin, hair and nails, reduction in bad breath and body odour.
